IDENTIFICATION OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTEXT

Our band Obscure which would be similar to placebo would be most likely signed to an independent record label such as DOMINO

In 1993, Laurence Bell started Domino Records on a governmental 'enterprise allowance scheme,' turning his weekly handout into local pressings of US acts like Sebadoh, Smog, Pavement, Come, and Elliott Smith. Domino was already a success when they signed Franz Ferdinand in 2003, but the Scottish band's astonishing success turned the label into a budding power. When they inked Arctic Monkeys in 2005, they just became a major power; but, rather than sinking their influx of cash into hookers and blow, Domino used it for artistic goodness. They inked a fearsome roster of brilliant bands (Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors, Owen Pallett) and released deluxe reissues of indie classics by Young Marble Giants, Galaxie 500, and Neutral Milk Hotel.

This would be an ideal record label for obscure as they dealt with bands such as the arctic monkeys

which is a young english band such as obsure.
They are also an indie band like obsucre and have similar target audiences and fans such as females.

OUR OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO - RUNNING UP THAT HILL ELECTRONIC REMIX

i was extremely pleased with the result of he video. it turned out as planned although as a group we encounted many challenges with the conventions of the music video. The contrast with the girl and the band is clearly shown. What i like most is the fact that the video is puzzling and makes you a bit confused but at the end of it everything makes sense to the audience, the puzzle pieces join up at the end and people would see what the idea and concept of the video was. This makes it intersting as it keeps the audience wondering till the very end.

The surreal concept of the video was mainly shown though the girl in the bath, the dead autum leaves worked out even better than the milk would have because it turned out to be more eye catching and weird. The band also added to the surrealism as on the day of the video shoot our group decided that it would work better if the band looked slightly gothic/punk.

So for so good

We are done with our rough cut, it was an up and down journey, we had to change things we had to start all over again ata point but now we have atleast roughly an idea of what we are doing

Problem with lenght of song

Today during editing, we realised that we havent solved the problem of having an extremely long song. the song originally went on for about 5 minutes. We didnt have enough clips to cover the full length of the song with our style of editing we are using (quick shots and slow shots). We decided to cut the song down to 3 minutes, this way we could use all the clips we have in a sufficient manner without looking like we just ran out of clips to use
The song was cut down in a way that the points we really wanted from the song to represent an action was kept and the repetition of choruses and hooks were the ones removed.

We also added effects to band because we figured it looked too plain and we had a whole section of band performance, in order for the audience watching not to get bored we used some effects t make it interesting.

EDITING: NEARLY THERE

My group and I are almost done with the editing. we are done with the band and have started editing the girl in the bath. We encouted problems while doing this as we realised we didnt have enough shots of the girl in the bath and we had to add some of the band to fit the time of the song without making the video look like a band performance. Another problem we encouterd was a problem with moving from one to another, there was a gap in one of the black walls the rooms are meant to roll into. so we had to cut it out to make it look a little bit right for our rough cuts.
We started approaching 2 minutes in our song. we started with the bedroom went through the band, edited the bathroom and now we're going to go back to the band to make it up for the shortage of clips.

WHAT IS POST-PRODUCTION?

Post production is effectively the final step in the making of a film or television programme - a process of refinement and transition of raw materials into a finished product before distribution and release to the public.
Editing is a key function - of picture, sound, effects, or a combination of these, but there are other areas - telecine, sound, creating *DVD's and special effects to name a few.

Digitisation has dramatically altered the post production sector, with new editing and effects capabilities emerging all the time. Digital technology and computer-based editing systems allow for clearer pictures and smoother editing techniques, constantly improving picture quality, and making the traditional film cutting rooms increasingly obsolete.
Im in the stage of post-production now as i am editing my music video. I am half way through the editing process and have gone through using picture, sound, effects, or a combination of these. The picture above is an example of post-production process which includes the editing of clips, sounds, pictures and effects.

Beginning of editing

We started editing today!! We succesfully finished editing and cutting the clips of the band. We are then (next session nof editing) going to move on to editing the main girls scene of the bedroom. We had some problems by outting the same tyoe of shot side by side, which doesnt neccessarily work.

Done with syncing!!

Today my group and I went into the editing suite determinded to finish syncing so we could get on with other things. We were successful in finishing our syncing. It was a long and hard process but we got through it. We started puting the clips in order after that. we created a bin for each set (bathroom bedrom livingroom) and started outing the clips in each bin they were matched to. We did this so it could be easier for us to identify clips when we start the processes of cutting the clips into place.

SECOND DAY OF EDITING

I went in to edit while my group was away and continued syncing process.
It took a long long while as not all our clips start from the same place so i had to blade alot of the clips to fit them in the right on the point of the music.
I finished syncing the ones that started from the beginning and started syncing the clips that started from the middle of the song and towards the end of the song aswell.
I managed to complete most of it but theres still a little syncing left to do.
I recon our next day of editing we would be able to fiinish it all and start the actual process of editing.

FIRST DAY OF EDITING

I logged into final cut pro for the first time today to edit the music video of running up that hill electonic remix.
Firstly i went through all the clips one by one and basically labelled them red for 'best clip' orange for 'good clip' and blue for 'alternative'. For the rest of the clips that were not needed that had one problem or the other, i left them blank.
After doing that which tookme about 20 minutes, due to the fact we had over 60 clips. I started to sync the clips. some clips started from the begginning of the song others didnt. Thats where we had a problem. Me and my team mate Leah had to start of syncing the clips that started in the begining and then listen carefully to when the music started on the other clips and try and sync that to match the main music. It was complicated but we got through it half way.

AOSD(4) - MY ROLE ON THE SHOOT DAY

Firstly when we set out the band and the first set, i got behind the camera and was filming for the most time.
I was required press the record button when the director said 'roll camera', i replied with 'camera rolling' after pressing the red record button.

I familiarized myself with the camera and helped change the lens when required to fit which camera angle it best fits.

We had a screen which showed how the video would look on actual screen so i looked at that screen while filming to see how the end result would appear.

I helped direct after being on the camera for long enough.
I directed the mostly he band by instructing the lead singer to do certain things when required. for e.g. the close up of the lead singer i asked him to not move side to side as his face. When it was just the normal mid shot he was asked to swing side to side and sometimes lean into the camera to be zoomed in like the do in rock videos.

I was on playback for most of the shoot after that. i was required to respond when the director would say 'playback', i would respond by saying, 'playback in 3,2,1' then press the play button. this was not as stressful as the rest of the roles as i just had to do as i was told and rewind the songs to the track required.

I also helped around with the moving of props and changing of sets. for e.g. i used the dirty down spray to make the first set look dirty.
i helped put mud on the tiles and also helped get the leaves from the trees to fill up the tub

At the end of everything. the group cleared up for the other group shooting on monday to enable them to set up their sets without much problem involved.

AOSD(3): SETTING UP FOR THE GIRLS SCENE

After we were done with the band, we began setting up for the girls scene. We cleaned up the place, swept and wiped dirt from the band away.

We got jess to get in her nurses outfit as you can see in the photo on the right.
we also did her hair and make -up for this bedroom scene.
we put on dark purple lipstick so she appears scary but contrasted it with pale powder and light eye make-up

On her bedroom set, we et out the props just the way we wanted it. we put the mattress on and put the skull beside her. with some dead flowers and an old telephone.

we got a lot of close-up in this scene so you would hardly notice its just mattress and theres no actual bed on it.

you could see the contacts we put on her really reflecting in the picture on the left. this all adds to the surrealism effect we were trying to acquire.

we had a little issue of the dead flowers going everywhere on te set but at the end it made it look better.

Setting up the bathroom scene.
After the bedroom scene we did the usual clearing up and sweeping. we had to work extra hard as there were dead petals everywhere.
We changed the wooden floors to classic black and white floor tiles and we changed the dirty white walls to dirty white tiles (with mud all over them). we did this to achieve the dirty look and keep it constant.
we also wanted to change the look for the bathroom totally to make the video a bit more interesting rather than having the boring old set 3 time in a row.

after change the walls and everything. We put in the props for the set. on the right picture you could see my fellow team members bringing in the bath tub which was the main focus on this set

We put jess (our lead girl) in the tub and filled it up with dead leaves.
This was a change from our original plan to fill in the bath with milk. The main problem was that we were running out of time and there was not sufficient water to fill up the bath as quickly.
so we looked around and figured we are surrounded by trees, its currently autumn/winter so there are alot of dead leaves around.
so we quickly got boxes filled with dead leaves and put it in the tub.

Jess was in there with  crop top and shorts. however we covered the little clothing on with leave to make her appear naked in the tub on screen.

It went perfectly well jess was perfect for her role, she loked the part and she did everything the current director asked her to do

Finished look in the tub

AOSD(2): THE BIG DAY!

We got out band members in quite early to do another couple of rounds on rehearsing. As seen on the photo on the left they all were quite tired

We put dark make up on them, specifically eyeliner around their eyes to give them that dark edgy look and by grace we were successful.

They put on their props, everyone besides the lead singer basically had a black shirt on to look uniformed. we put on fake piercings on two of the band members also to get and edgy look. The picture on the left shows one of them with a fake piercing in the middle of his lip.

We also put chockers on one of the band members who didnt have a fake piercing to make him look dark and edgy as well

Here we see the group members trying to get the band members ready to start shooting.
we changed the silver laptop because we figured the silvery colour was too bright and didn't go with the look we were trying to achieve so we put my purple laptop case on, which ended up matching with the lamp in the living room.

We got started placing in the props. You can see the off-white skull placed at the dj's deck. We put that there to add to the surrealism of things
we also added candles on the piano to make it look add to natural lightning as the set was made to be dark and to also give a strange religious feel to the set.

The lead singer had his big black coat on to appear different and had moe make-up on than the rest of the group members to show that he is more intense than the rest of the group.
he performed just as we asked him too and stared directly at the camera with widened eyes to appear very strange to the audience

we had a little issue of what to put in his pockets. At first we put joker fan but when shown on the screen it looked a bit ridiculous because he just looked like a childish tdk fan

However we switched it with dead flowers to create a link between him and our lead girl.

AOSD: THE DAY BEFORE THE BIG DAY

Account on shoot day
coming into the studio we first familiarized our selves with the place a little bit. we cleaned up a bit after the other group had finished with the shoot only because the previous shoot require glitter and therefor due to the nature of glitter there was glitter everywhere. We could not afford to get glitter anywhere in our set because of the dark surreal theme the video had, so that gave us a little trouble but it we managed to get through it.

We then gave ourselves roles to start of the big day so we dont get confused. we focused on the roles of director, camera man, playback and assistant director, however we knew that we would switch amongst ourselves to give each an everyone a chance to experience every role.

we then took pictures of the places we would be working with, like the one on the left hand side

SETTING UP

After all that. we started getting the set ready. we put on the living room set with the band because we decided that would be our first shoot. we used dirty down spray to make the walls look a bit scruffy becacause it was too white for the theme of the set. Theres plum a fellore group member using the dirty down spray to get the walls looking old and dead.

we chose wooden floor for the set because it contrasted with the white floors. we also didnt want to draw so much attention on it so we made it a bit dull.

After setting up the living room floors and all we then cleaned up ay left over glitter and sorted out the props that would be used for the living room and kept them aside.

REHEARSING WITH THE BAND

We brought the band in to rehearse the song. this was all to be sure that the band was familiar with the song. we made them do it over and over again so to be sure no mistakes were gonna be made on that day.

we made them try on their props to see how they would look and we also put in some props to get the feel of the set a little more

you could see the DJ, playing around with the deck because we made him so that.
you can also recognize the lead singer with the jacket on to differentiate from the rest of the band.

in the picture in the right you could see we were playing around
with the lighting to see which one best compliments the theme.

Group meeting: Preparing for our music video

Today we sorted all our props out and got ever group member to bring theirs in. We also completed our shot list and call list. The group came together to discuss whether or not we could get it all done on friday without any stress. We figured we could since our main problem was we didnt have the fish but then we got the fish brought in today. we spoke to dan about everything and he basically showed us how to organise everything. and gav eus our time for casting and setting up our set.

PHOTOSHOP OF CAST MEMBERS

Here are our four band members. specifically chosen because of their edgy ooks and their specific talents. The on sitting down is our dJ.

Research For The Ancilliary Task

Radio Head album cover arts.

this is similar to our album art as it is strange and surreal, its a rainbow which kind of looks like a zoomed in eye ball. made to look like that intentionally.

Guano apes album cover arts.

This is similar to our band as it has an animal in representations to the artist, which is quiet strange. In our music video we also use worms to represent surrealism and it might be a clever idea to use it as an album art.

LAMX  Album Cover

I like this a album cover because its quiet creative in its structure and its visual element aswell. It also features some of the indiviaul artist photographs which makes it easier to show the type of music that would be in this album. as you can tell from the photo the guy is wearing black, he has dark hair and dark eyeliner on. its obviously rock or heavy metal artist.

WEBSITES

These are all similar websites. They all have a dark surreal edge to it and sell merchandise of artwork that could be applyed to our artwork when doing our album cover.

STAR IMAGE FOR OBSCURE

Obscure would achieve similar star image to Muse, which is an English rock band from Teignmouth, Devon, formed in 1994. The band consists of school friends Matthew Bellamy (lead vocals, lead guitar, piano, keyboards, keytar). The reason is that they are a younger band and target people of younger ages.

Obscure is a young english boy band that attract loads of female fans. They would be remembered not only for their unique style in music but for their attractive looks and that would be one of their main marketing points.

TARGET AUDIENCE FOR OBSCURE

Target audience ages range between 16 - 25

PRIMARY TARGET AUDIENCE
16-19
Profile
Gender: female and male

Lifestyle: Experiencers, Enthusiastic, impulsive and Rebellious, too young to care about what else is going on in the world. They seek excitment and what would keep their adrenaline running. looking for whats risky and dangerous to do. trying to go against, rather than conform to the regular teenagers.

Interest: They are interested in looking trendy and looking outrageous. they like attention so they would mostlikely be loud and obnoxious in personality. they are interested drinking and partying with their mates aswell as being in bed all day. 'sleep all day and party all night'

SECONDARY TARGET AUDIENCE
 20-25

  Profile
Gender: female and male

Lifestyle: Experiencers aswell as strivers. They are a bit rebellious for their age but not as rebellious as the teenagers. more conservative in their private life. They work and have other responsibilities so dont seek as much excitment as the younger audience. they occasionally drink and party hard.

Interest:They are more interested in financial issues rather than looking trendy. They enjoy a good night at the pub regularly. watching reality tv.

Interest

RADIO HEAD (Similar band to placebo)

RADIO HEAD
Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments), Colin Greenwood (bass), Phil Selway (drums, percussion) and Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals).

This band is similar to placebo in how they dress how they look(wear dark make-up and wear black clothes).
Thye also make similar music to placebo like their music video '2 + 2 = 5' is very similar to Placebo 'every you every me'

They also attract the same type of dark gothic target audience as placebo does this is because they make similar music

here is a link to their websites ---> http://radiohead.com/

TARGET AUDIENCE FOR PLACEBO

Placebo - running up that hill
http://youtu.be/bEtqNz1vnhg

Placebo - Every you every me (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

This video quiet carefully show us the target audience the ban Plaebo attracts. They are 'die-hard' fans that range from ages 16 - 32. You could also tell from this video that it attracts both male and female audiences and i personally think this video shows that its male dominated

Goths are more likely to be attracted to placebo genres.

i found that while watching the music video to 'every you every me' i saw a whole lot of black/dark haired people in the video, hardly any blonde girly girls in the video. Also i found that they looked more in their twenties tham in their teens.

With this link to placebo website you could already get an overall veiw to the type of people they attract. they sell gothic like clothes and have alot of dark images on the website. So this confirms the type of target audience they attract.

Meeting with Dan about lighting.

We spoke to Dan about the lighting and set design that we will be using in our video.
He told us to make the lighting generally very dark, and also told us we would have light coming out of windows to give a certain surreal effect e.t.c. We added another room so the end conclusion was that there would be the rooms in a strange 1970's looking house, consisting of the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom. Having the girls doing weird stuff in each room while we would have the band also performing in the living room of the house as if they are next door.

We added a few things to go with the lighting like; we would have the girl in bath of white milk, getting dirtier throughout the clip. The girl is also mad and starts to recreate her ex boyfriend out of the strange objects in her house. We would have her dressed in a nurse costume as she has gone slightly insane.
There will be shots through the wall that will be taken on a 'dolly', so that the camera seems to be going through one room to the next (cutting between performance and narrative). Creating an effect that would go perfectly would the video.

DECONSTRUCTING ALBUM COVERS: RATED R [RIHANNA]

This image was taken by fashion photographer Ellen von Unwerth who stated that "Rihanna was looking to create something a bit new for the look of the album.” Unlike all the other album covers ‘RATED R’ does not feature Rihanna’s name on the album cover, this could possibly due to the fact that the imagery of the album is so powerful anybody would easily notice her although the name of the album helps to understand who she is with the ‘R’.

The images on all covers of the album include Rihanna dressed in black and white looking at the audience and the colours of the covers are also black and white.

First thing you notice that the album is black and white and has a dark edge to it. This might suggest that the music is timeless and it has a deep meaning to it. This could link back to rihanna's previous fight with her famous boyfriend chris brown.

Rihanna's harsh facial expression shows just how rebellious the album cover is. Props in the album in the album cover also shows how rebellious the music in the album probably is as she's wearing various rings, an all black costume, and black make-up both eye and lips. Her boy-is hairstyle shows her defiance and how she is 'kicking back' at the 'norm'.

ll covers of the album are in black and white this shows that the album is less commercial and reflects the darker sound that Rihanna is trying to create.
It seems like Rihanna was aiming it to an audience of rebellious teenagers going through certain problems which she sang about.
The album shows another side to Rihanna that we have not encountered with yet, by using such forceful and strong imagery it instantly defines her and her work.

The 'R' in Rated R is what you notice initially in this photo. It has been carved very sharply to reveal the edginess of the album.

Rihanna looks more vague in this picture which makes the album seem to be deeper than you think. Her face is turned ad her back is facing us this connotes revenge through her rebellious music, which again links to her problem with her famous ex boyfriend chris brown.

Rihanna was, "looking to create something a bit new for the look of the album." It however looks like very very reminiscent of the classic look of Grace Jones. This could be also thought as a self referential.

This is an example of an album art of Grace jones in the 1980's. it has the same metallic and dark edge to it. dark eye make up and black lipstick. Grace jones now has the same vengeful facial expression that Rihanna did in rated r album cover

Research for 3 initial ideas

First idea; Running up that hill - Placebo
Idea from; 'I FINK U FREEKY' by DIE ANTWOORDLink ----> http://youtu.be/8Uee_mcxvrw

We thought about getting ideas from this i think you freaky video as it goes with our thoughts on surrealism weirdness and freakishness.
The video inspired us with the use of simple shots yet overall being so complex. it had simple mid shots such as this

but yet the background still manages to capture the veiwers eyes. The man is just standing and doing weird facial expressions not necessarily doing anything difficult in particular.
There were close up shots such as this
with this shot you could see the debth of surrealism just with mere use of contact lenses and just a close up shot of her face. So its nothing too difficult to do, yet so captivating.
Die Antwoord also has some similarities with Placebo as they both make some wierd music and have similarities such as hairstyle choice.

However Die Antwoord is not a band, Placebo are an English alternative rock band from London. They were formed in 1994 by singer-guitarist Brian Molko and guitarist/bassist Stefan Olsdal. The band was soon joined by drummer Robert Schultzberg, who was later replaced by Steve Hewitt after conflicts with Molko. Hewitt left the band in October 2007 and was replaced by Steve Forrest in 2008. They are known for their androgynous image and angst-fueled musical content. To date, they have released six studio albums, all of which have reached the top 20 in the UK, and have sold over ten million records worldwide.
The known band that is mostly similar to Placebo would be a band like Guano Apes.
Guano Apes are an alternative rock band formed in 1994 in Göttingen, Germany. The group members are Sandra Nasić (vocals), Henning Rümenapp (guitars, backing vocals), Stefan Ude (bass, backing vocals) and Dennis Poschwatta (drums, backing vocals).Their sound has been described as a fusion of metal, pop and rap. Usually their music is labeled as alternative rock and alternative metal. They have released four studio albums (Proud Like a God in 1997, Don't Give Me Names in 2000, Walking on a Thin Line in 2003, Bel Air in 2011), one live album (Live in 2003), two compilation albums (Planet of the Apes in 2004 and Lost (T)apes in 2006), fifteen singles and five video albums.Theyve made hit songs such as ---> http://youtu.be/SFvCx6w_ptE
With over 12 million veiws, this song is just as 'chill' as the placebo running up the hill and owuld attract just about the same kind of audience.
Second idea; I got a brand new pair of roller skates, you got a key
idea from: happy videos.
The artist of the song Safka Melaine is an American singer-songwriter. Known professionally as simply Melanie, she is best known for her hits "Brand New Key", "Ruby Tuesday", "What Have They Done To My Song Ma" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)".
We chose this song because of how ridiculous the song sound and how much ridiculous scenes and shots we thought we could do with the video. We thought of having shots that include roller skating and roller skating is one of the known 'fun' sports out there.  we also thought about making the video in
90's them as roller skating is a very famous sport done in the 90's.
shots that look like the people are having so  much fun will keep the audience interested.
We also thought of having skate boards aswell which is also something fun and ridiculously dangerous to do .

Third Idea; Insane in the brain - Cyprus hillCypress Hill is an American hip hop group from South Gate, California. Cypress Hill was the first Cuban-American/Latino hip hop group to have platinum and multi-platinum albums, selling over 18 million albums worldwide. It is one of the most well-known groups inWest Coast rap and Hip Hop in general and was critically acclaimed for their first two groundbreaking albums
Band like Cyprus Hill; Funkidoobiest
Funkdoobiest is an American rap group from Los Angeles, California. The original members are Son Doobie (Jason Vasquez), DJ Ralph M (Ralph Medrano), and Tomahawk Funk (Tyrone Pacheco). The latter left after their second album.
Their first two albums were mainly produced by Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs. Their third album, The Troubleshooters, included production by Ralph M and DJ Rectangle. Whereas the other albums were clearly hardcore rap in the vein of Cypress Hill and other Soul Assassins members, The Troubleshooters was more versatile. DJ Muggs was the group's mentor and inspiration.
Funkidoobiest is also a band and have one known song 'bow wow wow'

For this idea we thought of having a brain painted on the forehead of one of the guys in the band and them doing weird facial expressions.
